about

ZeCoop: (written on Feb 2 - Uke day!) I think this is my third year writing with Ashley and it is always wonderful to see what she comes up with. After hearing it, I told her that I used to catch spiders and keep them as pets as a kid. I used to catch flies and bugs to feed them. Yep, I was THAT kid. So the lyrics really hit a soft spot for me. People that can write thoughtful lyrics are amazing to me, and then to have the voice to sing them too... Thank you Ashley for helping write another song I love. :)

@loveonamixtape : Yes, Zecoop-on-a-Mixtape collab number 3! And just like collab #2, @zecoop proved to be somewhat prescient, sending me a track that helped me flesh out and finish a lyrical idea I had just come up with. In this case, the morning I got the track from @zecoop, I had this idea about my fear of spiders (which is much better now!) and letting fear in general over often small things or things that can't be helped get in my way. The first two anecdotes in the songs are real. And I tried to use a third real anecdote, but the lyrics didn't really click until I made something up and added in the idea of fear being something that can get in the way of human connection (duh). Oh, and the "losing love is like a window" is a reference to/pulled from Paul Simon's "Graceland." Thanks again for the lovely track, John!! Oh and let me clarify, I do NOT actually go around murdering spiders, because I DO have a respect and appreciation of them in real life (and I am too scared of them to get that close besides....) Jk! Exaggerated for artistic effect!

lyrics

My husband once found a black spider
Crawling in the dirt
In the garden
And sure enough she had the tell-tale
Red hourglass on her abdomen
Now I’ll never go near the roses again

And I know spiders exist
To play a vital role in the ecosystem
Whatever that is
Whatever that is
So I try to let them be
But if one gets too close, ultimately
It’s gonna be it or me
It’s gonna be it or me
I can’t help it

And I avoid reaching into the corners
Of closets
Or into anything that’s been left
Undisturbed for more than a month
But I have a friend who was bitten by a
Brown recluse in her sleep
You do what you can to stay safe
But in the end can only do so much

And I know spiders just
Act out of self defense
And even the venomous
Ones aren’t truly malicious
Or so they’d likely tell us
Still I try to let them be
But if one gets too close, ultimately
It’s gonna be it or me
It’s gonna be it or me
I can’t help it

One early spring morning after you left
I sat outside with my coffee and wept
Until my skin and lips dried
Along with my eyes
In the pale orange light
That caught the strands of a web
And the thread from a spider
Hanging over my head
And I didn’t flee
I stayed and watched her instead

And I thought of abandoned things
Covered up in cobwebs
But then they aren’t really abandoned, are they?
Spiders have made their homes in them

So if losing love is like a window
Then let this spider be a symbol
And at my heart’s sill leave her gift:
This subtle change in perspective
