about

Acoustic drums were something that I had in my head for this song, but could not get it done during FAWM. The song ended up sounding great with Leslie's fantastic vocals and the whole thing had such a great theme that flowed from music to vocals. I added my 1973 Ludwig drums in May, 2022 and I think it finally achieved the goal I had back in February.

------------------------

ZeCoop: I wrote this piece with the definite idea that vocals would work, but knew it would not be a 'normal' vocal song. Leslie asked if she could have a go and when she told me what she was thinking, it was perfect. I knew that there would be many more layers and a ton more depth. What a joy to mix things like this - HUGE thank you to Leslie for really adding a ton of thought and meaning to the song in a way that really completed it perfectly. So beautiful... :)

Leslie: This song is an epic beast! I looped it in my headphones, stood in front of the mic and just opened my mouth. Started with the layered ethereal vocals at first, then imagined the voice of the universe speaking to someone looking up through the telescope at all its expansiveness. The voice spoke the words and I just sang them. Whether it's the lens of a telescope or a camera, the focus of light and vision let us share with each other what we see and would otherwise not see. ZeCoop brought all these images and feelings into sound and I loved getting to add to his grand vision.

Original instrumental version liner notes:
I haven't done a big sonic palette yet this FAWM and I was inspired after hearing a great song by @loveonamixtape that is a completely different style than this one. But, she has a Casio CT360 just like me and I wanted to play it. I recorded the 16 bar drum beat as slow as the keyboard would go. Then I recorded it again going through my Donner White Tape delay pedal, which has two separate L/R delays and controls for each. I panned those left and right in the mix and cut between the 'normal' drum track, which has a boatload of reverb on it and the delayed tracks.

Next I added the chords (pretty much making them up as I went because, you know, there are not many) with the fabulous "Synth Sound" on the Casio. Love that... I played the same part on my Roland RX202 string synth to add to the texture, and then played a bass part on the string synth.

Then, to really give it some sections, I played an electric guitar into a bunch of pedals (listed below) and headed into my 1973 Traynor YBA-1 amp. I was nearly there, but needed to make it bigger, so I added a synth bass part using my VolcaBass. :)

I have been thinking of the new James Webb Telescope, which is now fully deployed and zooming through space. I can't wait to see what it focuses in on, as the successor to the Hubble Telescope.
