Ivory Lace (ft Liz Frencham)

about

John: I wrote a song for FAWM2017 inspired by my time in Finland, visiting the Market Square in Helsinki. The song had an olde world feel, with heaviness and sadness, but still a little hope. Liz said she had a spark of an idea for it but time ran out and 2017 happened. For FAWM2018, Liz told me she had figured out the rest of the song, but life happened and she couldn't quite get to it before the end of FAWM. Today she sent me her rough demo of it, and as always a 'rough' demo from Liz is always gorgeous. Without the foresight of any vocal, I don't think about keys, and it turns out this one is just a little high, but I think her vocals are beautiful, touching and give a lot of emotion to the sad song she's written. I am thrilled that we could once again collaborate on a song, and I'll be re-recording this one a little lower so that we can get a proper recording with extra vocal parts. Thank you Liz, for completing another of my songs, and adding so much beauty. 🙂
----------------
Liz: I tried so many different lyric ideas for this but had trouble getting something sad that had no bitterness in it. I returned to this track a couple of weeks ago after the sad news of a friend losing a parent and then put myself in the perspective of the surviving partner. It’s such a beautiful track that @zecoop has created I couldn’t move too far away from the beautiful melody present.

Yeah it’s too high and consequently a little squeaky but John convinced me it sounded vulnerable and I can live with it for now.

lyrics

I see you then
in ivory lace
As tears blur my eyes
Forever the girl
with the porcelain face
Who kissed me to life

I see you then
With your ivory smile
When we moved to this town
Barefoot and proud
On the front porch swing
Nothing could keep us down

Oh I never told you
Lover how much I was learning from you
I’m forever changed by love

I see you then
In ivory sheets
Cradling our son
I was wired and tired
He was angel inspired
We were drowning in love

Oh I never told you
Lover how much I’ve learned from you
Even though this road was rough
You offered your hand to hold
Oh how I wish I’d told you
Holding your hand was worth the struggle
I’m forever changed by love, my love

I see you now
in ivory lace
As tears blur my eyes
Gone is the girl
with the porcelain face
Who kissed me to life
