Mermaid Café (ft Holly Lanasolyluna)

ZeCoop:
This song started in week two when I was getting pretty down about my writing. I was trying to do something fun with my Casio VL-Tone keyboard's drums by playing them through some effects pedals at random times. That worked out fine (and it was definitely completely random timing for the changes), and then I came up with a baritone guitar lick I liked...

Then I blanked out and got frustrated. I took it to @guatecoop's house and after we had done a few songs, he encouraged me to just start trying stuff with it. We recorded the baritone guitar part, but then he said we should splice the guitar part up and put in the bits and pieces. Well THAT was fun and it started sounding pretty cool, but how about putting the baritone guitar riff in reverse somewhere? Cool idea!! What else could we do... I got my kalimba and recorded that through a delay pedal. Then Rob got his Jaymar toy piano and he played a few things on that. Then as he was noodling on his acoustic, I asked him to record it so we could put that in too. It was a real hodge-podge, but it was sounding very cool and I knew exactly who I wanted to send it to.

As always, she just completely nailed the exact vibe and whimsy of the song and took it to heights I couldn't even imagine. Holly is amazing!!

(Gear)
Casio VL-Tone - drum rhythm - lots of FX pedals
Danelectro Baritone guitar
Kalimba
Jaymar Toy Piano
Epiphone acoustic guitar

@lanasolyluna : So I used a Yamaha PSS-F30 which I picked up in India--it's the special Indian version with some cool Indian rhythms and harmonium--to make the harmonium parts, just kind of jammed around for what I felt sounded like a melody.

I got a very playful vibe from the song, so I based it on some of the weird things I've heard my friends' kids say that are actually sort of brilliant, deep, and poetic. Also, one of my friend's kids met me when I was dressed up for Halloween so every time she talks about me, I'm the girl with pink hair. I also added in some of this Japanese-English speaking dictionary and Hello Kitty Drum Set.

lyrics

Hey I wanna play around
But I’m working on a new sound
Cuz I found a dream in the clouds
And their feelings are loud
So I’m spinning their tale
And then I’ve got to set sail
To visit mermaid café
They’re closing early today

Soaring across the moon
Stars sleep to my tune
My light will fill the room

A unicorn will come too
A pegasaus will come too
Do you want to come too?
Do you want to come too?
A special bargain for you.
Don’t forget fancy shoes.
Don’t forget fancy shoes.

Hey I’ll wear my witchy disguise
And bring my broom that flies
So no need to get on the train
And I’ll bring my monkey that’s tame
Pink hair, please wear your pink hair
Pink hair, please wear your pink hair

I’ll dance like the trees
Rain drops
Wind flops
Tree tops
Bird flocks

I am free
I am me
I am me
Just be
Let’s just...

Hey I’ll let you climb in my tree
But you know it’s not free
And it’s protected by bees
Cuz you’ve been friendly to me

Let’s ride on the sea
Let’s go climb the tree
Let’s drink fairy tea
Let’s go and be free
Let’s go and be free
Let’s go and be free

about

ZeCoop Kalamazoo, Michigan

I love playing music and keep learning new instruments. My songs are in a wide range of styles, from indie-rock to surf, to folk to rock to electronic... I never know. I record at home in a studio I put together in a spare room. I work (via the web) with a lot of vocal/lyric collaborators from all over the world.
