ZeCoop: I met Ashley last year and we really connected on a couple songs. The first one that she wrote, had a garage rock / Velvet Underground vibe and I just added 'the band'. So even though she has a little baby in the house now, I kinda sorta wanted to fuzz garage rock up her house and she was up for it... the riff in my head fit one of the ZeCoopDrums I had made, so I just went with that. Big Muff Fuzz on the bass, Super Fuzz on my Danelectro, Lovepedal MkIII (Tonebender) on my Jazzmaster. Supa-FUZZ!! Sent it over and, well, I'll let Ashley take it from here, but WOW... did I love what she did! Amazing... Belting out powerful vocals and making an even more powerful lyrical statement. I love it - thank you!!! :)
Ashley: ZeCoop is a mind-reader, confirmed! I couldn't sleep the other night, with anxieties, a hungry baby, and LYRICS in my head on top of it! For some reason, I was thinking about early social media, when it seemed to be all about how you presented yourself by curating your lists of likes and favs, which then got me thinking about my then-unfortunate tendencies of equating being a "cool girl" with appealing to the tastes of dudes and being ashamed of/disparaging of anything that felt too "feminine" (except, of course, for the ways in which I was expected to perform femininity: just the right amount, make it seem easy) ANYWAY. Whatever got me thinking about that, I wrote some lyrics down in the middle of the night, only to have @zecoop send me this track that worked PERFECTLY, with just a few tweaks and adds. Two of my fav tracks from last year were collabs with @zecoop, so sooooo stoked he wanted to collab again and sent me this track!
lyrics
When I get insecure and jealous
I throw my sisters under the bus
And try to raise myself up
To the standards that you set for us
And say, "I'm not like other girls
I'm not like other girls"
As long as you set the culture
I'll stay uneasy and unsure
As you move the goalpost further
Into the violent and obscure
So I hid away all the books and CDs
That reveal the weaker side of me
Shared only favorites in the approved style
On my social media profile
To show, I'm not like other girls
I'm not like other girls
I can't let you see me sweat
And I can't let you see me starve
I have to keep my body small
And my personality large
But not too large
And I can have my own opinions
As long as you agree
But I can disagree
Strategically
To keep things interesting
For you
Some girls might think it's cruel
How the boys get to set all the rules
But I think it's cool
I think it's cool
I'm not like other girls
