Protective Spines (4-track cassette)

about

This is one of my favorite tapes ever... It started in Japan with Holly and Tomo, who composed a beautiful song on uke and vocals. Then it traveled 5,869 miles to England for Martin to add the awesome synthy bleeps that fit the Santadharma style so well. Then 3,792 miles across the ocean to me in the USA.

Usually, there is a click track that gets erased by the last person, but this tape had a wonderful Casio drum track that was (IMHO) critical and I didn't want to lose it. So, I sent the whole tape over to a second tape, where I now had a couple of tracks to play with. I added a couple of parts from my Casio CT-360.including a 'Human Voice' synth wash and some 'vibraphone'. I did some noise reduction to get rid of a lot of the hiss, but this one took very little production to sound amazing. 😀

I think it is a wonderful song and it only took 9661 miles to make it!!

This is an actual cassette that was mailed around to four different FAWMers via snail mail. Each person added one track and mailed it to the next person. The song is a mystery to the participants until it is transferred to computer and mixed.

lyrics

Landscape of gray snow in piles on neon roads
Cars zoom by like flies pursued by magic toads
Heart’s already frozen but I’ll freeze a little more
Wading in concrete ocean, dreaming of sandy shore

Easier to carve out my heart than endure its poetry
I belong nowhere since I’m always true to me
Spoon out my soul like a pile of apple seeds
mush of feelings, pile of rotting leaves

Seasons mark a colorful resistance
since each year they reappear with persistence
Time is vague, time is empty, time is

Easier to carve out my heart than endure its poetry
Avoid the angry stares cast like boiling tea
Am I a villain, or a woman outside the lines
Cactus who grew an army of protective spines

about

ZeCoop Kalamazoo, Michigan

I love playing music and keep learning new instruments. My songs are in a wide range of styles, from indie-rock to surf, to folk to rock to electronic... I never know. I record at home in a studio I put together in a spare room. I work (via the web) with a lot of vocal/lyric collaborators from all over the world.
